Often properties are not left secure because of a distraction or not properly locking your home. It is worth checking your products regularly to ensure that they are still working to their full capacity, items like locks, handles, frames and alarms all need to be checked and maintained on a regular basis.
With external doors, including patio doors you will need to check all the framework for weak points. Keys are especially a cause for concern, you should make sure that keys are not labelled with the address and kept away from the door. It is worth getting a deadlock fitted alongside a yale lock for extra security.
Make sure blinds and curtains are closed when necessary so burglars can’t look in and spot your valuables and the layout of the room. Obscure the windows if possible and regularly check the locks are working and visible, obvious locks will deter burglars away as they don’t tend to break glass and risk unwanted attention.
Exterior and Interior Lighting
If you feel your neighbourhood is particularly dark or there are street lights that are not working you should call your local council and make them aware of this. Street lighting is a significant deterrent for burglars as they will want minimal attention drawn to them. In addition, if you are going away overnight you could use a light timer, by programming this your lights in specified rooms can be turned on at different times throughout the day to imitate the appearance of someone being home.
No Social Media
Firstly check your privacy settings and ensure your profile isn’t public. Announcing that you are on holiday or uploading an image of your latest gadget will only highlight the fact that your home is particularly vulnerable at this point.
Keep your valuables hidden! Items such as tablets, watches, phones and laptops are all easy and attractive items for burglars. Don’t make it easy for them, keep stuff hidden, in non-obvious places and not stowed away all together.
